Eating at a buffet can feel like heaven for any food lover. There are a wider variety of options to choose from and many of them can be incredibly flavor packed.
However, every once in a while, you might try something that is just not great, and it can ruin an entire meal for anyone.
That’s why we will talk about 10 buffet items that are best avoided if you find yourself in that situation.
Sushi
When picking food at a buffet, Sushi is a natural pick for a lot of people. And why wouldn’t they choose it?
If prepared well, Sushi is a dish that is very visually appealing and rich in flavor. However, at a buffet, it can cause food poisoning.
Why? Well, the reason is simple. A lot of people tend to touch the food at a buffet and you can’t really know if they washed their hands or not.
Another reason is that sushi just becomes susceptible to contamination the longer it is out in the open. So, you might want to avoid it this time.
Chicken Salads
I know we all love a good chicken salad. After all, there is nothing better than seeing a dish that looks and feels healthy at first glance.
But, that might not be the case at a buffet. When exposed for too long at higher temperatures, Chicken in particular is more susceptible to E. Coli and that can be a huge detriment.
If you want to be safe, make sure the chicken salad is cold when you first pick it up at a buffet.
Oysters
Oysters are some of the most unique foods out there and they are great for preparing if you are in the mood for something more fancy.
However, eating them at a buffet can be a bit problematic. Raw Oysters have a chance of causing Vibrosis in people and that is a big problem.
Knowing which oysters are contaminated and which ones aren’t is really difficult, so you might want to pass up on it all together and just prepare them at home.
Bread
We have mentioned so far just how problematic some food can be for our health, but bread is different.
It’s highly unlikely you will ever get sick from eating bread, but buffets are generally designed to have bread on the front to fill you up, so you can have less food that you typically enjoy.
If you are a food lover and you enjoy trying different kinds of foods, then you might want to skip bread in this case.
Condiments
Similar to a lot of the food we have talked about, Condiments in trays tend to be problematic when it comes to your health.
Many of them can be loaded with bacteria because there is a good chance that somebody might have put his fingers in there when trying to use a spoon and that is never a good thing.
We can also add the fact that these condiments typically don’t look very visually appealing, so skipping them probably won’t be a big problem for you.
Fried Foods
This one is pretty straightforward. Foods like fried chicken can be really tasty and savory when you eat at a buffet.
However, if we are talking about our health, then we should also take in consideration that these dishes were prepared in an enormous amount of oil.
There is also a chance that some of that oil was reused several times, so eating foods like this on a regular basis can cause health problems in the long run, so you might want to think about skipping it.
Desserts
I know we all like desserts, and it’s for a good reason, but we have to also acknowledge the fact that many of these foods are purposefully created to make us feel satiated fast.
At a buffet, this can be a trap, not only because it can make you feel satiated fast, but because you can also overeat it on an occasion.
This means that we typically end up in a pretty big calorie surplus, and that is rarely a good thing. So, next time you crave a dessert from a buffet, maybe it’s better to be moderate.
Tuna
We have already mentioned several sea food options that are available at a buffet can be harmful, and Tuna is not an exception.
For similar reasons, tuna salads are typically unhealthy and prone to contamination if left out at room temperature.
It has to be kept in colder temperatures than other fishes, or else it could wreak havoc on your health. If you see a tuna salad at a buffet, be careful when choosing.
Soda
I know, soda is not food, but it’s a drink that is commonly available at any buffet. And that is for a very good reason.
Soda, like bread, costs very little and is there to make you feel fuller, so you can eat less expensive foods by the time you are done with your first meal.
Even though there is nothing wrong with enjoying a soda every once in a while, you might want to wait until after you have tried everything you like in this case.
Potato Based Dishes
Similar to soda, desserts and bread, dishes made out of potatoes like fries or mashed potatoes are carbohydrate bombs and they can fill you up pretty quickly.
If you crave new food at a buffet, but still want a side of fries, then think about first trying out the things you like.
After that, if you still feel up for it after the first meal, then go grab some fries. I know I would.
