Ingredients That Make A Difference

• Apples: The star of the show! Fresh, chopped apples add moisture, texture, and that warm, sweet flavor that’s central to apple fritters.

• Flour (All-purpose and White Whole Wheat): Provides the structure and base for the fritters. The combination of both flours gives them a tender, slightly dense texture.

• Cinnamon and Nutmeg: These spices add warmth and depth of flavor that bring out the classic “apple pie” taste. They give the fritters that comforting spiced goodness.

• Brown Sugar: Adds sweetness and a bit of molasses flavor, giving the fritters their rich, caramelized taste when baked.

• Butter: Contributes to the flakiness and richness of the fritter dough, making them melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

• Egg: Helps bind the ingredients together and adds a bit of richness to the batter.

• Milk: Provides moisture for the dough and helps create the right consistency for the batter.

• Vanilla Extract: Adds a subtle, warm sweetness that complements the apple and spices perfectly.

• Confectioner’s Sugar (for glaze): The glaze is an essential part of these fritters, adding sweetness and a glossy finish that takes the recipe from good to great.

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven:
Set your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat. (If your mat isn’t broiler-safe, don’t worry – you can skip it, though the pan might get a bit messier.)

2. Prepare the Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, white whole wheat flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

3. Mix the Wet Ingredients:
In a separate small bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Gently fold in the chopped apple.

4. Form the Fritters:
Drop the batter by 1/4 cup portions onto the prepared baking sheet. (For smaller fritters, use a heaping tablespoon instead.)

5. Bake the Fritters:
Bake for 11-13 minutes, or until the bottoms are golden brown and the centers are set. (For smaller fritters, start checking around 8 minutes.) Once baked, remove the fritters to a wire rack and turn your oven to broil.

6. Make the Glaze:
While the oven is heating up, whisk together the confectioner’s sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Brush a thin layer of glaze over the fritters.

7. Broil for Extra Goodness:
Place the fritters back in the oven under the broiler for 2-4 minutes, just until the tops start to turn golden and the glaze begins to bubble. Keep a close eye on them – they can brown quickly!

8. Finish with More Glaze:
Carefully remove the fritters from the oven and brush them with the remaining glaze. Let the glaze harden slightly before serving.

These fritters are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, so dig in while they’re warm!

How to Enjoy Your Baked Apple Fritters

Baked Apple Fritters topped with whipped cream

These fritters are amazing on their own, but you can serve them with a few extras to elevate the experience.

Top with Whipped Cream: A dollop of freshly whipped cream makes these fritters feel extra indulgent.

Pair with Coffee or Tea: These fritters make a perfect breakfast companion for your morning coffee or afternoon tea.

Add a Side of Yogurt: For a lighter, tangy twist, serve your fritters with a side of plain or vanilla yogurt. The creaminess of the yogurt pairs wonderfully with the sweetness of the fritters.

How to Keep These Fritters Fresh

These Baked Apple Fritters are best enjoyed fresh, but if you happen to have leftovers, here’s how you can store them:

Room Temperature: Store the fritters in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. This will keep them soft and delicious.

Refrigerate: If you want to keep them for a longer period, you can refrigerate them for up to a week. Be sure to wrap them tightly to prevent them from drying out.

Freezing: You can freeze the fritters for up to 3 months. Wrap each fritter individually in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer bag. When you’re ready to enjoy, just thaw and reheat in the oven.
